How we chose
For this list we analysed independent tests: the freely available information from Stiftung Warentest (vacuum cleaner database, August 2026), the ranking and individual reviews by testit.de, the Computer Bild comparison (issue 16/2026) and reviews by homeandsmart, netzwelt, testsieger.de and SmarthomeAssistent, alongside manufacturer specs. We only included models sold in Germany in 2026, for example on Amazon.de. We did not test the vacuums ourselves. Stiftung Warentest's individual grades are paywalled, so we do not quote them.
What to look for: suction on your floors
Suction counts for 45 percent of the Stiftung Warentest grade and is tested on hard floors, in crevices and on carpet. Many models are strong on hard floors but struggle on deep-pile carpet. If you have a lot of carpet, check test results for exactly that rather than air watt figures.
What to look for: real battery life
Manufacturer claims such as 70 or 90 minutes almost always apply to the lowest setting only. In the tests, batteries often lasted only about 7 to 16 minutes on boost. For large homes, a removable battery you can buy a spare for is worth having.

Fully assembled, most cordless vacuums weigh between 3 and almost 4 kilograms, which you notice when cleaning overhead or on stairs. Handling accounts for 30 percent of the Stiftung Warentest grade. Bendable wands help under furniture; ultra-light models weigh under 2 kilograms but run for less time.
What to look for: pet hair and long hair
Stiftung Warentest measures how long a vacuum takes to remove dog and cat hair from carpet. Look for brush rolls that resist tangling, such as conical or self-cleaning rollers. Otherwise you will regularly have to cut hair out.
What to look for: dust bin and docking station
Bins usually hold well under a litre and need emptying often. A self-emptying station does this automatically, but takes up space and may bring running costs for bags or odour filters.
What to look for: mopping and extras
Combination models with a mop head remove fresh stains but do not replace a proper wet-dry vacuum and are fiddly to clean. Laser or LED lights, a display and an auto mode are handy but not essential.
