How we chose

For this list we analysed independent tests: netzwelt's reviews and LG OLED comparison (August to October 2026), hifi.de's reviews, testit.de's overviews with grades from CHIP and Computer Bild, Expert Reviews' 55-inch review and areaDVD's test, plus the freely available information from Stiftung Warentest. We only included 2026 models sold in Germany in autumn 2026. Many magazines test at 65 inches, so we always state which size was tested. We did not test the TVs ourselves. Stiftung Warentest's individual grades are paywalled, so we do not quote them.

What to look for: OLED or Mini LED

OLED TVs show true black and look good from the side, ideal for movies in a dark room. Mini LED models such as the TCL C7L or Samsung QN80H often get brighter and cost less, but show halos around bright objects in dark scenes.

What to look for: brightness and anti-glare

In a bright living room, what matters is not only brightness but how much the screen reflects. Matte or strongly anti-glare panels like those on the Samsung S90H or LG G6 help against windows and lamps. Budget OLEDs such as the LG B6 are dimmer and more reflective.

What to look for: gaming inputs

For PS5 and Xbox you need HDMI 2.1 with 4K at 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM. With a gaming PC, some models reach 144 or 165 Hz. Check how many inputs offer the full standard: the TCL C7L has only two, and one of them is often needed for the soundbar.

What to look for: viewing distance and room

55 inches equals a diagonal of about 140 centimetres. netzwelt suggests a viewing distance of about 3 metres for this size. If you sit much further away, consider 65 inches.

What to look for: sound

Stiftung Warentest weights sound at 20 percent of the grade and picture at 45 percent. In the tests we analysed, slim TVs usually sound thin, and hifi.de's sound scores are well below its picture scores. For movie nights, plan for a soundbar.

What to look for: tuners and recording

Many 2026 models only have a single TV tuner, so you cannot record one programme while watching another. Some sets, such as the TCL C7L, cannot record to USB at all.

Frequently asked questions

Which 55-inch TV won the Stiftung Warentest?

Stiftung Warentest lists 269 TVs in its database, most recently with test programme 07/2026. Individual grades are only in the paid section of test.de, so we do not quote them here. The weighting is freely available: picture 45 percent, handling 25 percent, sound 20 percent and power consumption 10 percent.

OLED or Mini LED: which is better at 55 inches?

For movies and dark rooms, OLEDs like the LG C6 lead because they show true black. Mini LED TVs such as the TCL C7L get very bright and cost less, but show blooming and, according to tests, have narrower viewing angles. For a very bright room, an anti-glare OLED like the Samsung S90H is a good compromise.

How far should I sit from a 55-inch TV?

netzwelt suggests about 3 metres for 55 inches, a diagonal of roughly 140 centimetres. With 4K content you can sit a little closer without seeing pixels.

Is last year's model like the LG C5 still worth it?

It can be, if the price is much lower. According to testit.de, though, the C6 is around 20 percent brighter than the C5. For the cheaper B6, hifi.de sees little progress: it gets the same score as its predecessor, the B5.

Do I need a soundbar for a 55-inch TV?

For movie nights, usually yes. testit.de criticises the weak bass of the LG C6, and in hifi.de's tests the sound score of every model listed here is well below its picture score. A positive exception is the Samsung S90H, whose sound netzwelt describes as powerful and clean.
