The best bean-to-cup coffee machine 2026: 6 machines for espresso, milk drinks and tight budgets
Updated 25 October 2026
Short answer
The best bean-to-cup coffee machine for most people is the De'Longhi Rivelia: testit.de rates it 'good' (1.5), Computer Bild 'very good' (1.4), and it costs around 630 euros. For lots of hot and cold milk drinks, go for the De'Longhi Eletta Explore (testit 1.4); if you like to fine-tune everything, the netzwelt test winner Nivona NIVO 8117 (1.3) fits. The budget pick with a milk system is the De'Longhi Magnifica Evo, the cheap Magnifica S is enough if you don't need automatic frothing, and the Siemens EQ.700 iAroma offers plenty of convenience with an app.
How we chose
For this list we analysed independent tests: the freely available information from Stiftung Warentest (July 2026 test covering 36 machines), the ranking and individual reviews by testit.de, the comparison and reviews by netzwelt and the overview by SmarthomeAssistent. We only quote other grades, such as those from Computer Bild or imtest, where testit.de lists them in its test summaries. Manufacturer specs complete the picture. We only included models sold in Germany in 2026, for example on Amazon.de. We did not test the machines ourselves. Stiftung Warentest's individual grades are paywalled, so we do not quote them.
What to look for: espresso and grinder
At Stiftung Warentest, espresso and cappuccino together make up 40 percent of the grade, judged by coffee sommeliers. Make sure the grinder goes fine enough: some tests criticise grind settings that are too coarse, which makes espresso thin. A quiet grinder is a bonus if others are still asleep in the morning.
What to look for: milk system
There are three types: a steam wand for frothing by hand, a clip-on milk jug, or a tube that draws milk straight from the carton or a jug. Automatic systems are more convenient, while a steam wand takes practice. If you only drink espresso or café crema, a machine without automatic frothing saves money.
What to look for: cleaning and maintenance
Stiftung Warentest rates how easy the milk system and brew unit are to clean and how simple descaling is. A removable brew unit can be rinsed under the tap. Also check whether the tank, drip tray and milk jug are dishwasher-safe: on the Nivona NIVO 8117, for example, none of them are.
What to look for: controls and drink choice
Cheaper machines have a few direct buttons, expensive ones have touchscreens with 40 or more recipes, user profiles and an app. Handling accounts for 20 percent of the Stiftung Warentest grade. Think about how many different drinks you actually need.
What to look for: cold drinks and nitro
Newer machines offer cold brew or nitro coffee. In the tests, though, these drinks came out only lukewarm without ice or chilled water; testit.de measured about 48 degrees on the Eletta Explore. For a truly cold drink you will still need ice.
What to look for: size and running costs
Most machines weigh 9 to 12 kilograms, and some take up a lot of counter space. Stiftung Warentest also calculates annual water filter costs and checks power consumption, including standby. A large water tank means less frequent refilling.
Frequently asked questions
Which bean-to-cup machine won the Stiftung Warentest?
Stiftung Warentest updated its results in July 2026; the database covers 36 bean-to-cup machines, 13 of them new in 2026. The test winner and individual grades are only in the paid section of test.de, so we do not quote them here. Freely available: grades range from good to satisfactory, and good machines with automatic milk frothing cost less than half as much as the most expensive models.
How much does a good bean-to-cup machine cost?
Machines around 270 to 360 euros, such as the De'Longhi Magnifica S or Magnifica Evo, already make good espresso. According to Stiftung Warentest, models without a milk system cost roughly 280 to 630 euros. Spending more mainly gets you more drinks, displays, apps and cold drinks, not automatically better coffee.
Do I need an automatic milk system?
Only if you often drink cappuccino or latte macchiato. An automatic system is more convenient but needs regular rinsing. With a steam wand, as on the Magnifica S, you froth milk yourself, which according to testit.de takes some practice.
Can I froth plant milk in a bean-to-cup machine?
Yes, most plant drinks can be frothed. According to Coffeeness, soy and almond drinks foam stably, regular oat drink collapses quickly because of its low protein content, and barista versions hold up much better. Rice, spelt and coconut drinks foam poorly. Filter homemade plant milk well so it does not clog tubes and nozzles.
Are cold brew and nitro from a machine really cold?
Usually not. testit.de measured about 48 degrees for cold brew from the De'Longhi Eletta Explore and 47 degrees on the Siemens EQ.700 iAroma. netzwelt and testit.de also report that the Nivona NIVO 8117's nitro coffee is rather warm without very cold water or ice. So keep ice cubes handy.
