How we chose

For this list we analysed independent tests: the freely available information from Stiftung Warentest (air purifier test, April 2026), testit.de's comparison (as of 09/2026) and individual reviews, homeandsmart's air purifier round-up and the test summaries on testberichte.de, alongside manufacturer specs and a Bosch press release on the Stiftung Warentest result. We only included models sold in Germany in 2026. We did not test the purifiers ourselves. Stiftung Warentest's individual grades are paywalled, so we only quote the result Bosch published itself.

What to look for: CADR and real room size

CADR tells you how much clean air the unit delivers per hour. Manufacturer room sizes are often based on just one air change per hour. testit.de considers four to five air changes realistic, so size generously and pick a model with headroom.

What to look for: filter performance over time

According to Stiftung Warentest, many filters lose much of their performance over time. Some units clean a 16 m² bedroom well with a new filter but only a fraction of it with a used one. Look for HEPA filters, ideally with a stated filter class such as H13.

What to look for: running costs

Stiftung Warentest found running costs of about 65 to 175 euros a year, and replacement filters cost around 40 to 85 euros. For some units, running costs come close to the purchase price. Check the filter price and replacement interval before you buy.

What to look for: noise in sleep mode

If the unit runs at night, the quietest mode matters. In testit.de's measurements, values were often above the manufacturer claims, usually around 34 to 40 dB at one metre. On the highest setting, many units reach 55 to over 60 dB.

What to look for: sensor and auto mode

A good sensor detects poor air quickly and raises the fan speed. In testit's comparison, the units reacted within 9 to 38 seconds, and some did not notice smoke from an incense stick at all. Not every model measures gases and odours.

What to look for: app and controls

An app shows history and filter status and lets you set schedules, but it is not essential. Readable buttons and an easy filter change matter more. For models with an app, Stiftung Warentest also checks data protection.

Frequently asked questions

Which air purifier won the Stiftung Warentest?

Stiftung Warentest tested new air purifiers in April 2026, and its table now lists 16 models. The grades are paywalled. According to a Bosch press release, the Bosch Air 4000 remains test winner with 'good' (2.3); the result comes from issue 3/2024 and still stands after the new test in issue 5/2026.

Do air purifiers help with pollen allergies?

An air purifier with a HEPA filter removes particles such as pollen, dust and pet hair from the air. The unit must match the room size and the filter needs changing regularly, because according to Stiftung Warentest filter performance drops over time on many models. An air purifier does not replace medical treatment.

How large a room can an air purifier handle?

Manufacturers often assume just one air change per hour and arrive at large areas. testit.de considers four to five air changes sensible. For the Dyson HushJet Compact, for example, Dyson claims up to 100 m², while testit.de puts the realistic range at 20 to 25 m².

How much does an air purifier cost to run?

According to Stiftung Warentest, annual running costs for electricity and filters are about 65 to 175 euros. testit.de estimates around 70 euros a year in filter costs for the Philips PureProtect 3200 and 50 to 60 euros for the Levoit Core 300S. Models with a long-life filter such as the Shark NeverChange Max save money here.

How loud is an air purifier?

In sleep mode, testit.de measured about 34 to 40 dB at one metre for most units, often more than the manufacturer claims. On the highest setting, readings ranged from 53 dB for the Bosch Air 4000i to around 62 dB for the Levoit Core 300S.
